From the Pastor’s Pen – May, 2021

Let’s know, let’s press on to know the LORD;
whose appearing is as certain as the dawn;
who will come to us like the showers,
like the spring rains that give drink to the earth.

Hosea 6:3

36 While they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 37 They were terrified and afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost.

38 He said to them, “Why are you startled? Why are doubts arising in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It’s really me! Touch me and see, for a ghost doesn’t have flesh and bones like you see I have.” 40 As he said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 Because they were wondering and questioning in the midst of their happiness, he said to them, “Do you have any-thing to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of baked fish. 43 Taking it, he ate it in front of them.

Luke 24:36-43

Jesus rose from the dead, but the disciples had to be convinced he wasn’t a ghost. The disciples had to be shown the evidence of crucifixion on Jesus’ body. They had to see Jesus eat some fish to be convinced that they were in a dream come true, not a nightmare.

Humans have celebrated Spring for as long as anyone knows for the same reason. In the depths of Winter, sometimes all we have is the promise that Spring is on the way. We know in our hearts that Spring will come, just like we know in our hearts that God brings about resurrection.

Jesus died, Christ rose, the Church was born! The disciples “were wondering and questioning in the midst of their happiness,” and the Risen Christ gave them reassurance.

We worship a God of resurrection! We are witnesses to the Holy Spirit’s resurrecting power! Again and again, we rise with Christ.
